From Dictatorship to Democracy

The transition from dictatorship to democracy has never been easy. Thanks to nonviolent resistance and the power of social networking, that transition is more real today than ever.

Gene Sharp, the 83 years old advocate of nonviolent resistance against dictatorial regimes, has written a number of books and articles on nonviolent theories and strategies, which continue to inspire young people around the world; the theories and strategies are extracted from the teachings of Ghandi, MLK, etc, and from the experiences of several nonviolent movements that were executed successfully. Particularly, his widely read manual “from dictatorship to democracy,” a summary book of strategies and tactics on nonviolent resistance, which has been translated into many languages including Afaan Oromo, Amharic and Tigrigna, has inspired contemporary youngsters who, unexpectedly and without extreme violence, have brought down vicious dictators such as Mubarak and Milošević.

Nonviolent struggle is the antithesis of violent struggle and a very effective tool to dismantle a corrupt dictatorship without heavy bloodshed.
